Abstract (2. Language):
Current study initially adapted the Spiritual Meaning Scale (SMS) and the Expressions of Spirituality Inventory (ESI) into Turkish and consequently relationships among different dimensions of spiritual meaning and spirituality were examined. The adaptation was carried out with a sample of 546 participants composed of undergraduates and adults. The construct validity of the SMS and the ESI was examined by confirmatory factor analysis, the significance of the difference between 27% lower and upper groups, and item-total correlations. The reliability of the scales was examined through internal consistency and test-retest. The relationships among the scores were examined through Pearson product-moment correlation coefficients. As a result of confirmatory factor analyses, the goodness of fit index values were found within the acceptable thresholds for both scales. Cronbach alpha coefficients of the SMS and the ESI were found to be .81 and .83, respectively, and the testretest reliability coefficients were found to be .76 and .85, respectively. These findings showed that the SMS and the ESI are valid and reliable measures of spiritual meaning and spirituality, respectively. The correlation coefficients of the relationships among spiritual meaning and spirituality expressions varied between .55 and .19 (p < .01). Spiritual meaning correlated with cognitive orientation at the highest level, whereas it correlated with paranormal beliefs at the lowest level. The findings showed that spiritual meaning was associated with cognitive and religious dimensions of spirituality. We found that these two constructs were associated positively at medium level.
