This paper is a theoretical attempt to explain the ideological nature of anti-Muslim discourse found in the British press. It is argued that dominant media capital, that is held in ever fewer hands, seeks to subvert South Asian Muslims by endeavouring to define an explicitly negative view of Islam. The development has been especially pertinent since the Iranian Revolution of 1979, and the end of the Cold War that effectively came with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The paper is based on an evaluation of intricate historical and contemporary debates, undertaking an assessment of the economic and social marginalisation of South Asian Muslims and the way in which Tslamophobia' and 'Islamic fundamentalism' is manufactured in the British press, much to the detriment of otherwise disadvantaged ethnic minority groups in an increasingly xenophobic society.This paper is aimed to highlighten the way in which it is the economic position of media capital that helps to create an elite culture, which reinforces the dominant political and cultural ecology of the newspaper industry. The future of Muslims in Britain, as in other advanced Western European economies, will be determined largely by how they are perceived by white English groups in British society. It is also, however, affected by the way in which news in relation to Muslims and the religion of Islam is reported by the British press.

Bu çalışmada İngiliz basınında yer alan İslam karşıtı söylemin ideolojik yapısın teorik bazda açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. İngiltere yaşayan Müslüman nüfusun genelinin, neredeyse geçtiğimiz yüzyıl ortalarına kadar İngiltere'nin en önemli sömürge topraklarından olan Güney Asya bölgesinden gelen göçmenlerden oluşması, İngiliz basınının ülke içindeki İslam ve Müslüman söylemini daha çok bu kitle üzerinden oluşturmasına yol açmaktadır. Makalede öncelikle İngiltere'deki Müslüman kitlenin oluşmasının sosyo-ekonomik nedenleri ve göç olgusu üzerinde durulmuştur. Daha sonra İngiliz basının sermaye yapısı, gzetelerin henüz oluşum aşamalarından başlayan örneklerle tasvir edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Batı dünyasında yükselen İslam korkusu ve karşıtlığını (İslamofobi) İngiliz basınında yer alan Güney Asya Müslümanları hakkındaki haberleri inceleyerek açıklamaya çalışan bu makale genel bir durum değerlendirmesi yapmayı amaçla¬maktadır.
