PHARMACOGNOSTICAL EVALUTION OF TWO MENTHA SPECIES OF LAMIACEAE

Journal Name:

Publication Year:

Abstract (2. Language):
The present study has been carried out on two important species of Mentha: M. spicata Linn and M. piperata Linn. of family Lamiaceae which are valuable medicinal plants. The paper aims to identify and differentiate various anatomical features such as root and stem vessels, anatomy of node, leaf anatomy, petiole anatomy and leaf epidermis (quantitative microscopy viz., SI, SF, VTN,VIN), for evaluating the selected species of Mentha. In addition, physicochemical analyses such as moisture contents, different ash values, different extractive values are studied. Phytochemical screening methods were applied for identifying the major chemical groups in these species such as volatile oil, starch, protein, tannin, saponin, fat, glycoside and alkaloids.
