CAREER STRATEGIES PREFERRED FOR SUCCESS: A RESEARCH ON STUDENTS WITH GRADUATE EDUCATION

Abstract (2. Language): 
The concept of career is one of the most important challenging areas for all individuals whether they exist in working life or not. Within this view, all individuals who wish to reinforce their gains to have a successful career life, act from different methods. One of these methods is to head towards career targets by increasing their level of education. The main purpose of this study is to identify the career strategies selected by graduate students to reach their targets and to sustain their presences throughout their work life and careers. Beside this purpose, it has been targeted to determine whether their strategies differ according to their demographic characteristics. Findings from 248 students who receive presently education in a well-known private university located in Istanbul, revealed that dominant strategies preferred by them are “had internal locus of control” and “keeping informed of the opportunities in the company” while the least used strategies are “become member of professional and other social unions to support my career” and “using contacts in the industry to get on”.

Kariyer kavramı, ister çalışma hayatının içinde olsun ister olmasın, tüm bireyler için en önemli mücadele alanlarından biridir. Bu bağlamda, başarılı bir kariyere sahip olmak üzere kazanımlarını artırmak isteyen tüm bireyler, farklı yöntemler üzerinden hareket etmektedir. Bu yöntemlerden biri de eğitim düzeylerini artırarak, kariyer hedeflerine yönelmektir. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, bireylerin iş hayatları ve kariyerleri boyunca elde etmek istedikleri başarıya ya da hedeflerine ulaşabilmeleri ve iş yaşamında varlıklarını sürdürebilmeleri için seçmiş oldukları kariyer stratejilerini belirlemektir. Bu temel amacın yanında, söz konusu kariyer strateji tercihlerinin farklı demografik özelliklerine göre farklılaşıp farklılaşmadığı tespit edilmeye çalışılacaktır. İstanbul’da bulunan köklü bir vakıf üniversitesinde lisansüstü eğitim alan 248 öğrenci üzerinden yapılan araştırma sonucunda öğrencilerin en baskın olarak “kontrolün kendinde olması” ve “kurum içindeki fırsatlardan haber olma” stratejilerini; en az düzeyde ise “kariyer için mesleki ve sosyal sendikalara üye olma” ve “eş-dost bağlantılarını kullanma” stratejilerini tercih ettikleri saptanmıştır.
