Obesity poses a pandemic affecting about 600 million people in the world. As stated in the 2003 report of the World Health Organization, obesity sits at the top in global risk ranking when morbidity and mortality are considered (2). Available treatments include diet, lifestyle and eating habit modifications, and physical activity as the first group of precautions, whereas these measures are often inadequate and surgery is considered in patients with BMI over thirty five.

Obezite dünyada yaklaşık 600 milyon kişiyi etkileyen bir pandemi oluşturmaktadır. Dünya Sağlık Örgütü’nün 2003 yılındaki bir raporunda belirtildiği üzere; obezite, hastalık ve ölümler için global risk sıralamasında 1. sıraya oturmuş durumdadır (2). Mevcut tedavi yöntemleri arasında diyet, hayat tarzı ve beslenme alışkanlıklarının değiştirilmesi, fiziksel aktivite ilk tercih edilmesi gerekli önlemler arasında yer almakta iken, VKİ (vücut kitle indeksi) > 35 olan hastalarda, bu önlemler genellikle yetersiz kalmakta ve cerrahi gündeme gelmektedir.
