Dental amalgam is one of the oldest restorative materials used in dentistry, but it's not an esthetical material. In recent years, new resin-based restorative materials were producted in dentistry and using of amalgam was decreased. purthermore, amalgam has just high using rates in a lot of dental clinics. It's suggested that, there's a continious release of mercury from amalgam restorations and this releasing may cause a potential risk for patients and dentists and contribute to development of some diseases such as loss of weight, tremor, gastrointestinal disturbances, oral lichenoid lesions, teratogenic effects, Multiple-Sclerosis ve Alzheimer's Disease. In several studies it was shown that, levels of mercury released from amalgam restorations were in lower doses than high levels of mercury which caused to health risk. Mercury has a possible toxicity risk for dental personal, but it's reported that, it may prevented if a good mercury hygene was performed in clinics carefully.

Dental amalgam, di ş hekimliğinde kullanılan en eski dolgu maddelerinden biri olan, ancak estetik olmayan bir materyaldir. Son yıllarda, diş hekimliğinde, yeni rezin-bazlı restoratif materyaller üretilmiş ve amalgamın kullanımı eskiye oranla azalmıştır. Bununla birlikte amalgam, halen pek çok diş hekimliği kliniğinde yüksek kullanım oranlarına sahiptir. Son yıllarda, amalgam restorasyonlardan salınan civanın, vücut üzerinde bir takım olumsuz etkilere neden olabileceği ve hastalar ve diş hekimleri için potansiyel risk oluşturarak; kilo kaybı, tremor, gastrointestinal bozukluklar, likenoid lezyonlar, teratojenik etkiler, Multipl-Sklerozis ve Alzheimer Hastalığı gibi hastalıklara yol açabileceği ileri sürülmüştür. Ancak yapılan araştırmalarda, amalgam dolgulardan salınan civanın, hastalar için hayati risk oluşturabilecek yüksek seviyelerden çok daha düşük dozlarda olduğu gösterilmiştir. Diş hekimliği personeli için ise civa, toksisite riskine sahiptir, ancak dental kliniklerde civa hijyenine titizlikle dikkat edildiği takdirde, bu riskin tamamiyle önlenebileceği bildirilmektedir.
