Abstract (2. Language):
cationic protein levels with clinical and functional parameters ın asthma bronchiale patients. We reported this study in order to determine the relation between serum eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) levels, and classical diagnostic and follow up methods in asthmatic patients. Seventeen patients with mild asthma as first group, 19 patients wİth moderate asthma as se-cond group, a total of 26 female and 10 male, and 19 healthy persons (14 female, 5 male) in the same age range as third group were İncluded in the study. Atopy signs and symptoms, physİcal and radiological examination findings, peripheral eosinophil counts, total and specifıc lgE levels, prick skin tests and pulmonary function tests were compared with serum ECP levels. In 789 of study group cases (28/36) prick skin tests and specifıc lgE levels were positive. Sen-sitivity against house dust mite antigen was determined by prick skin test in 67% of patients (24/36) and by specİfic lgE level measurement in 69% of patients (25/36). There was no signi-ficant correlation between serum ECP levels and severity and duration of asthma, physical and radiological examination findings, total and specifıc lgE levels, and allergic prick test. On the other hand, serum ECP levels showed a significant correlation wİth peripheral eosinophil counts (>400/mm3, ECP: 36.08+22.94; <400/mm3, ECP: 18.93±14.88) p=0.034 r=0.323, where as adverse relation was observed between serum ECP levels and pulmonary function tests (FEV1%-~ECP p=0.043, r=-0.375; FEV1/FVC%--ECP p=0.018, r—0.449) İn conelusion serum ECP level shows activation of eosinophils, is specific marker of inflam-matory airway obstruction and may be of help in therapeutİc approach in ehronic asthma
