Abstract (2. Language):
Oxygen is an essential nutrient that serves as a key substrate in cellular metabolism and bioenergetics. O2 deprivation creates stress in living cells. During low O2 (hypoxic) conditions, cells activate a number of adaptive responses. The events are coordinated by various cellular pathways including mTOR signaling, and regulation of several genes by hypoxia inducible factor (HIF). HIFs direct critical adaptations to enable cells, tissues, and organisms to survive and thrive in these conditions. Heterodimeric transcription factor hypoxia inducible factor-1 (HIF-1) functions as a master regulator of oxygen homeostasis in almost all nucleated mammalian cells, regulating the expression of a myriad of genes.
