Abstract (2. Language): 
The interpretations of the Athenian and Roman conceptions of republicanism has formed highly different approaches in political philosophy. Unlike the Athenian republicanism which is based on a theory that gives priority to political participation, Roman republicanism is based on a theory that emphasizes the concept of freedom within the boundaries of the rule of law. Another point of divergence for these two approaches is their perceptions of freedom. Unlike the Athenian republicanism which defines freedom as political participation, which could also be seen as positive liberty, the Roman republicanism considers freedom as nondomination which establishes affinity with liberalism due to its emphasis on the importance of negative liberty. This study aims to make a benchmarking between thoughts of Athens and Rome and their theories on republicanism.

Cumhuriyetçiliğin Atina ve Roma yorumları siyaset felsefesinde birbirinden oldukça farklı anlayışlar doğurmuştur. Atina cumhuriyetçiliği siyasal katılımı önceleyen bir teori üzerine temellendirilirken, Roma cumhuriyetçiliği yasaların egemenliğinde bir özgürlük anlayışı üzerine oturtulmuştur. Atina ve Roma cumhuriyetçiliğinin bir diğer ayrıştıkları nokta özgürlüğe ilişkin yorumlamalarıdır. Atina cumhuriyetçiliği özgürlüğü katılımla eşdeğer tutarken veya kavrama pozitif bir anlam yüklerken, Roma cumhuriyetçiliği özgürlüğü “tahakkümsüzlük” olarak kavramakta, böylece kavrama negatif bir vasıf kazandırarak liberalizme yaklaşmaktadır. Bu çalışma Atina ve Roma düşüncelerinin kuramsal bir karşılaştırmasını yapmayı amaçlamaktadır.
