Abstract (2. Language):
Objective: Hypothyrodism is one of the most widespread preventable causes of mental retardation. Thyroglobulin level gives important clues to determine the etiology of and fix the therapy plan for hypothroidism. This study aims to determine the role of and significance of serum thyroglobulin levels in the etiology of hypothyroidism. Methods: The medical records of 265 cases of hypothyroidism (123 female, 142 male) in the endocrinology department, were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Serum thyroglobulin levels were measured in agenesis, hypoplasia, ectopia and dyshormonogenesis as 3.07 ng/ml, 40.92 ng/ml, 33.1 ng/ml, 499 ng/ml and 52.25 ng/ml for disorders in which the etiology could not be determined, respectively. Conclusions: In congenital hypothyroidism the etiology aids to determine the duration of the therapy and to estimate prognosis. The serum thyroglobulin level is a reliable parameter to determine the etiology
