Peritoneal dialysis can be a therapy for the short-term management of refractory congestive heart failure, and fluid removal. At the same time it can serve as a long-term ambulatory management either as a palliative therapy or as a bridge to definitive surgery or transplantation. A reduction in hospitalization rates and an improvement in functional capacity can also be expected under peritoneal dialysis.

Tedaviye dirençli kalp yetersizliğinde kısa süreli tedavi ve ultrafiltrasyon için ön görülen periton diyalizi aynı zamanda bu hastaların uzun dönem palyatif tedavilerinde de kullanılabilmektedir. Bu süre içinde hastalar cerrahi girişim veya transplantasyon için hazırlanabilirler. Periton diyalizi tedavisi ile hastaneye yatış oranı azaldığı gibi fonksiyonel kapasitede düzelme de gözlenebilir.
