Akut interstisyel nefrit (AİN), böbreklerde tübülointerstisyel bölgenin inflamasyonu ile birlikte akut böbrek yetmezliği tablosunun ortaya çıkması olarak tanımlanabilir. İnterstisyel inflamasyonda lenfositler başta olmak üzere mononükleer hücrelerin infiltrasyonu ön plandadır. Ancak nötrofiller ve non-kazeifiye granülomlarda görülebilir. Ayrıca belirgin interstisyel ödem vardır. Tübül hücrelerinde harabiyet gö¬ rülebilir ve bu durum bazen akut tübüler nekrozdan ayırımda zorluk yaratabilir.
