Abstract (2. Language):
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to determine whether free oxygen radicals play a role or not in patients with head and neck malign tumors.
Material and Methods: Malondialdehyde levels; superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase enzyme activities were assessed in 24 patients (16 males, 8 females; mean age 60.3 years) who had established malign tumor in head and neck area. It was compared with 17 healthy persons (9 males, 8 females; mean age 54.8 years).
Results: In the study group erythrocyte malondialdehyde levels and superoxide dismutase activities were higher than the control group, but catalase activities were lower than the control group (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between two groups regarding glutathione peroxidase activities (p>0.05). Conclusion: Increased malondialdehyde levels may cause to grow up head and neck malign tumor. The addi¬tion of antioxidant therapy may be useful for reduce of both tissue damage and carsinogenesis.
