With current advances in computer technologies and telecommunications, the maritime transport industry has finally plunged into the information age. This technological revolution is quite acceptable to those working in the sector, as a way of helping improve safety at sea and environmental protection, while improving the economics and efficiency of maritime transport. The subject of this paper is to discuss the expected benefits and possible ways in which information technology can assist the major issues in modern ship management. IT strategies for shipping are also summarized.
