Abstract (2. Language):
The modernization process that the Ottoman Empire experienced in the course of 19th century had
its impacts on the city. The structure of the cities, particularly İstanbul, had changed drastically
and the quantity and pecliarity of crime also changed. The marginals such as thiesves, swindlers,
pickpockets and the crimes they committed had expanded. Conspicuos consumption increased in
this process and owners of wealth became a target for the mentioned marginals.

Osmanlı modernleşmesi “cemaat”ten “cemiyet”e geçilirken yansımasını kentin yapısında da
bulmuştu. Köklü bir dönüşüme uğrayan İstanbul’da suçu niteliği ve niceliğinde bir artış meydana
geliyordu. Bu bağlamda hırsız, dolandırıcı ve yankesici gibi marjinaller ile işledikleri suçlar belli
bir yaygınlık kazanıyordu. Gösterişçi tüketim artarken, servet sahipleri marjinallerin hedefi haline
geliyordu.
