Abstract (2. Language):
Two subjects of different sex were observed from the day they used their first words to the end of their second birthday. Each month the number of words, gain, and parts of speech were recorded, and the two subjects were compared. The, curve which shows the gain is characterized by spurts, These up-and-downs are not interpreted as having any relation with the acquisition of a new motor skill. The spurts are thought of as representing an urge to acquire new words. After each spurt the child is satisfied and is involved- With the use of these new words. After a while, when his experiences enrich he finds his vocabulary insufficient, and this urges him to make a new effort to acquire more words. It is thought that these urges represent a need, and so language is a basic need, in human beings.
