Abstract (2. Language):
The effect of iron-deficiency anemia and iron treatment on plasma thyroid hormone levels. To determine of possible alterations in plasma triiodothyroinine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) levels in patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) Subjects and Method: Thirty women (mean age 37,9+1,9 yr) with IDA and euthyroid clinic and 26 controls (mean age 34,7±1,4 yr) were enrolled in this study. Hemoglobin, hematocrite, serum iron, serum iron binding capacity, ferritin, T3, T4, and thyrotropin (TSH) measurements were performed in both gıoups at basal state and repeated after oral iron supplementation of three months in IDA group. At basal state T3 and T4 levels of IDA group were significantly lower than controls (4,7+0,2 vs. 5,3+0,1 pmol/1 and 14,3+0,5 vs. 16,5+0,2 pmol/1; p=0,009 and p<0,001, respectively). The mean TSH levels of IDA group was not different from controls (p>0,05). After iron supplementation there were significant increase in T3 (5,4(0,3 pmol/1; p=0,022) and T4 (16,1+0,8 pmol/1; p=0,037) and decrease in TSH (2,5+0,4 vs. 1,7+0,3 ulU/ml; p=0,009) when compaıed with basal levels. The differences between IDA group and controls with respect to thyroid hormone levels were disappeared after iron supplementation. We propose that IDA and iron supplementation have a significant role on thyroid hormon levels.
