AİDS epidemisinin ilk yıllarında en önemli özellik olguların Kaposi sarkomuna (KS) olan belirgin eğilimleriydi. Bu nadir tümör AİDS hastalarında normale göre 20.000 kat daha sıktı <3>. Özellikle renal transplantasyonu hastalar başta olmak üzere diğer im-munosupresif olgularda da yüksek oranda görülmesine rağmen KS hiçbirisinde AİDS'teki kadar sık değildir. Etiyolojisi ise henüz açıklığa kavuşmamıştır. Örneğin, KS'unun değişik klinik formlarının aynı hastalığın bir belirtisi olup olmadığı bilinmemektedir. KS' unun gerçek bir klonal malini-te mi yoksa aşırı sitokin ve büyüme faktörlerine bağlı hiperproliferatif bir patoloji mi olduğu tartışılmaktadır. KS sıklıkla akciğeri tutar. KS'u ile ilgili çalışmaların birçoğu gözlemsel nitelikte olup küçük hasta gruplarında bulguları tarif etmekten öteye gidememiştir. Böylece tanı ve tedavi açısından farklı görüşler ortaya çıkmıştır. Derlememiz literatür bilgilerinin ışığında pulmoner KS'unun tanı ve tedavisindeki yeni görüşleri değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır.
