Sialic acid (X-Acetyl-neuraminic acid) is synthesized in the body from glucose. It has important Junctions as part of the structure of glucoproteins and mucoproteins. Some studies have shown an increase in the level of serum glucoproteins and mucoproteins in diabetes mellitus (DM) and changes also occur in the level of sialic acid. Serum total sialic acid (SA) levels of I ~ patients with Tip I DM followed at Department of Pediatrics, Dicle I niversity Medical Faculty were measured. 12 of the patients were male and 5 were female and age range of "to 1" (median 11."'612.9) years. 14 healthy children (if matched sex and age were taken as controls. The mean level of'SA was 10~.~li 2H.33 in patients with Tip I DM and was 6H.3~t 11.31 in the control group SA levels were significantly higher in DM when compared to the kontrol group (F 0.001). (ilikoprotein ve mukoproteinlerın bir parçası olarak önemli fonksiyonları olan sialik asit (SA) (\-asetil nörominik asit) vücutta glukozdan sente: edilir. Çeşitli çalışmalarda diabetes mellitusta (DM) glikoprotein ile mukoprotein düzeylerinde artma ve SA düzeylerinde değişiklikler gösterilmiştir. Dicle üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Çocuk Sağlığı ve Hastalıkları Anabilim Dalı'nda izlenen 12'si erkek, 5'i kız. "-12 yaş (ortalama yaş: 11.~+2.9 yıl) arasında olan insüline bağımlı (Tip I) DM'lu F7 hastada serum SA düzeyleri ölçüldü ve benzer yaş ve cinsteki 14 çocukla karşılaştırıldı. Tip I DM'lu hastalarda ortalama SA düzeyi 1()~.~h 2S.33 mgdl. kontrol grubunda ise 6H.3~rl 1.31 mgdl idi. DM'lu çocuklarda SA düzeyinin kontrol grubuna oranla anlamlı derecede yüksek olduğu görüldü (/' 0.001).
