Archetypes and Symbols in the Story of Bilge Karasu: “A Medieval Monk”

The works of Bilge Karasu (1930-1995) were translated into several languages and received various awards. His
style of writing, which is studied in this article, has a special place in Turkish literature. Karasu transforms his
works into multi-layered texts through the use of archetypes and symbols. Thus, his form of writing is exceptional in our literature. Bilge Karasu’s stories are generally multi layered texts. In order to access the deeper layers of his
stories, it is important to recognize and distinguish the universal symbols and archetypes used therein. Although all
the stories in his book Göçmüş Kediler Bahçesi have similar features, this article aims to explore the symbols and
archetypes used in a selected story, “A Medieval Monk”. In his stories the author also uses archaic and derivative
words. He uses these words so skilfully that, for example, in “A Medieval Monk” the narrator’s narration of
an archaic period gives the impression to the reader that medieval language is spoken as the word Medieval is
used in the title. The other stories in the book have similar features. In the story analysed, the time and space are
uncertain, but due to the connotations brought out by the symbols, the reader does not feel that uncertainty. Even
more importantly, the text does not introduce any feeling of uncertainty, despite its being open to interpretation
and association. Readers who do not want to go deeper into the layers of the text also can have a holistic reading
of the text by using only the first association of the words. Karasu uses a finely planned writing style in his texts.
The text that is analysed gives the impression that there is nothing excessive or lacking, therefore, it is evident that
the writer masterfully worked on it.
In this article, then, the story “A Medieval Monk”, the third story in Bilge Karasu’s book The Garden of Departed
Cats, is studied through an examination of the existence of archetypes, symbols and their functions in the text.
Considering the story analysed as a journey to the deeper layers of the text under the guidance of symbols, this
study aims at contributing to this journey.

1995 yılında kaybettiğimiz Bilge Karasu‘nun eserleri değişik dillere çevrilmiş ve çeşitli ödüllere layık
görülmüştür. Ancak yazarın bu çalışmada da inceleyeceğimiz yazım biçimi kendisini edebiyatımızda özel bir yere
taşır. Çünkü Karasu metinlerinde kullandığı semboller ve arketipler yoluyla eserlerini çok katmanlı metinlere
dönüştürmektedir. Bu haliyle de yazınsal üslubu edebiyatımızda az rastlanılan özelliktedir. Bilge Karasu genel
olarak öykülerini çok katmanlı olarak yazar. Karasu’nun öykülerinde daha derindeki katmanlara inebilmek için,
eserde kullanılan evrensel sembolleri ve arketipleri tanımak gerekir. Göçmüş Kediler Bahçesi adlı kitabında yer
alan diğer öyküler de benzer özellikler taşımaktadırlar, ancak bu çalışma için “Bir Ortaçağ Abdalı” adlı öyküsü
seçilerek, yazarın kullandığı semboller ve arketipler incelenmeye çalışılmıştır. Yazar öykülerinde aynı zamanda
güncel olarak fazla kullanılmayan ve bunun yanı sıra türetilmiş kelimeler de kullanır. Ancak bu kelimeleri
öylesine bir ustalıkla kullanır ki, örneğin öyküde anlatıcının arkaik bir zamandan konuşuyor olması okuyucuda
başlıkta sözü geçen Ortaçağ kelimesi nedeniyle ortaçağ dili ile konuşulduğu hissini uyandırır. Kitapta yer alan
diğer öyküler de benzer özellikler taşımaktadırlar. İnceleyeceğimiz öyküde zaman ve mekân belirsizdir ancak
sembollerin getirdiği çağrışımlar yardımıyla okuyucu böyle bir belirsizlik hissetmez. Bundan daha da önemlisi
metin yoruma ve çağrışıma açık olmasına rağmen belirsizlik taşımaz. Derine inmek istemeyen okuyucu eserde
kullanılan kelimelerin ilk çağrışımları ile okuyarak da bütünlüklü bir okuma yapabilir. Karasu öykülerinde ince
ince hesaplanmış bir yazım biçimi kullanır. İncelediğimiz metin bize ne fazla ne eksik olduğu duygusunu verir,
buradan da metnin üzerinde ne kadar ustaca çalışıldığı tahmin edilebilir.
Bu makalede Bilge Karasu’nun 1991 yılında basılmış olan Göçmüş Kediler Bahçesi adlı öykü kitabında üçüncü
sırada yer alan “Bir Ortaçağ Abdalı” adlı öykü arketiplerin ve sembollerin varlıkları ve metindeki işlevleri
açısından incelenecektir. Bu çalışmayı incelenecek öykü yoluyla Karasu metinlerinin alt katmanlarına sembollerin
rehberliğinde yapılacak bir yolculuk gibi düşünürsek, bu yolculuğa az da olsa katkıda bulunabilmek hedeflerden
birisidir.
