The palatine torus which is situated along the median suture of the hard palate is described as a bony protuberance of varying in size, form and extent. In this study, the skulls of 387 human skeletons belonging to 12 ancient Anatolian populations which are dated from the Early Bronze Age to the first quarter of the twentieth century have been examined in terms of age-related changes of palatine torus. It is observed that the palatine torus changes both its frequency and size in Anatolian populations. In general, the frequency of palatine torus was higher in the middle ages of life than in younger and older age groups. Similarly, the size of torus reaches to the highest dimensions in the middle age. A relative decrease of the frequency observed in older age group. This data support that palatine torus is affected not only by genetic factors, but also by environmental and functional factors.

Sert damak kemiğinin orta hattı boyunca gelişen torus palatinus farklı boyut, biçim ve dağılıma sahip olan kemik çıkıntı olarak tanımlanmaktadır. Bu çalışmada Erken Tunç çağından 20. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğine kadar geniş bir zaman diliminde yaşamış, 12 eski Anadolu topluluğuna ait 387 kafatasında torus palatinus sıklığının yaşa bağlı değişimi incelenmiştir. Bu değişimi belirlemek için X2 analizi kullanılmıştır. Anadolu topluluklarında torus palatinusun hem sıklığının hem de boyutunun yaşa bağlı olarak değiştiği gözlemlenmiştir. Genel olarak torus palatinusun frekansı yaşamın orta evresinde genç ve yaşlı evresine göre daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Aynı şekilde torusun boyutunun da erişkin yaş grubunda en yüksek seviyeye ulaşırken, yaşlı bireylerin bulunduğu grupta nispeten azaldığı tespit edilmiştir. Bu durum, torusun oluşumunda sadece genetik faktörlerin değil çevresel ve fonksiyonel faktörlerin de etkili olduğu görüşünü desteklemektedir.
