Abstract (2. Language):
Despite plenty of research, the exact etiology for Recurrent Aphthous Stomatitis (RAS), one of the most common oral ulcerative diseases, still remains unclear. Predisposing factors such as trauma, microbial factors, food, drug reactions, immune disorders, hormonal imbalance and smoking, all of which trigger free radical formation and upset the oxidant/antioxidant balance of an organism, as well as familial tendency, are believed to be involved in the etiology of RAS. With its contents of antioxidant molecules and enzymes, saliva is the first step of the defensive mechanism against free radicals. The aim of the present study is to determine the salivary Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC), Uric Acid (UA) levels, and Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx) activity in patients with RAS and to investigate the possible relations of these parameters to RAS. Unstimulated saliva samples were obtained from a total of 75 individuals: 50 patients with RAS and 25 healthy individuals who formed the control group. The TAC, UA levels and GPx activity were determined for the samples. No significant difference was found between the patient and control groups with regard to their salivary TAC and UA levels (p>0.05). GPx activity was lower in the saliva of the patients with RAS when compared to the control group (p<0.05).
