Abstract (2. Language): 
After Martin Luther, John Calvin is the most important Protestant reformer and theologian. He gave Protestant doctrine its most incisive and systematic formulation. His Institutes of the Christian Religion is early Protestantism’s greatest theological work. The life, thoughts and works of Calvin who is a pivotal figure in the shaping of Western culture is approachable from many directions. This paper deals with the main features of his theology and main factors behind his thoughts, and so examines the originality of his theology. Calvin’s theology is based on Augustinian tradition and previous Reformers’ views. His theology owes its originality to his uncompromising commitment to literal interpretation of Bible.

John Calvin, Martin Luther’in ardından, Protestanlığın en önemli reformcusu ve teologudur. Protestan doktrinine en keskin ve sistematik formulasyonunu vermiştir. Onun, Hıristiyan Dininin Temelleriadlıeseri erken dönem Protestanlığının en önemli çalışmasıdır. Batıkültürünün şekillenmesinde önemli bir figür olan Calvin’in hayatına, düşüncelerine ve yaptıklarına farklıyönlerden yaklaşılabilir. Bu makale onun teolojisinin temel özelliklerini ve düşüncesinin arkasında yatan ana etkenleri ele almakta ve böylece teolojisinin özgünlüğünü irdelemektedir. Calvin’in teolojisi Augustine’ci gelenek ile kendinden önceki reformcuların görüşlerine dayanmaktadır. Özgünlüğünü Kitab-ıMukaddes’in literal/lafızcıyorumlanmasına olan tavizsiz bağlılığına borçludur.
