DROPOUT TENDENCY AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS AND ITS REASONS (A Case Study in Şanlıurfa)

The aim of this study was to determine the dropout tendencies of secondary school students and to state the factors, affecting the dropout tendency. This research was conducted, using descriptive survey method. The data were collected through a questionnaire developed by the researchers. During the administration of the question naire, 16 primary schools in three different areas were selected through simple random sampling and 900 students attending those schools were given the questionnaire. Research findings showed that, in general, there was a dropout tendency in 16,1% of secondary school students. When the findings related to personal factors were considered, it was seen that gender and students’ having unfavorable attitudes were factors that led to differences in dropout tendency. When the findings related to social environment were considered, it was seen that factors such as exclusion from social environment and making friends with students who have dropout tendency or those who left school or those with low academic success increase dropout tendency considerably. When the findings related to school factors were considered, it was seen that factors such as dissatisfaction with school, teachers and administrators, not getting enough help and support from teachers and administrators together with the abundance of unfavorable attitudes in school environment increased dropout tendency.

Bu araştırma, ilköğretim ikinci kademe öğrencilerinde okulu bırakma eğilimi ve nedenlerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Betimsel tarama yöntemiyle gerçekleştirilen araştırma verileri, araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan bir anketle elde edilmiştir. Anketlerin uygulanma aşamasında, üç ayrı bölgeden basit tesadüfî yöntemle seçilen 16 ilköğretim okulu örnekleme alınmış ve bu okullarda öğrenim gören toplam 900 öğrenciye anket uygulanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, ilköğretim ikinci kademe öğrencileri arasında genel olarak %16,1 oranında okulu bırakma eğilimi saptanmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda cinsiyetin, öğrencilerin rahatsız edici tutum ve davranışlara sahip olma durumlarının okulu bırakma eğilimleri açısından farklılık yaratan etkenler olduğu görülmüştür. Sosyal çevre etkenleri açısından bakıldığında; sosyal çevreden dışlanma, okulu bırakma eğilimi olan, okulu bırakmış ve okul başarısı zayıf olanlarla arkadaşlık kurma gibi faktörlerin okulu bırakma riskini belirgin biçimde arttırdığı görülmüştür. Okul etkenleri açısından bakıldığında; okuldan, öğretmenlerden ve yöneticilerden memnuniyetsizlik, öğretmen ve yöneticilerden gerekli yardım ve desteği bulamama, okul ortamında görülen kuralsız davranışların çokluğu gibi etkenlerin okulu bırakma eğilimini arttırdığı görülmüştür.
