‘Al-huruf al-muqatta/detached letters and its role in inimitabity of the Qur’an Some letters and words occur at the beginning of the Qur’anic Chapters are called ‘alhuruf al-muqatta/detached letters’. These letters and words have drawen the attention of the scholars from early years of Islam to our own time. Scholars have made various comments on the meaning and significance of them, but it is important to note that some of these interpretations are far from their actual meanings. This article primarely focuses on the meanings of these letters and words from classical period to modern scholarship. In addition to this, it also re-evaluates these interpretations and places emphasis on some important meanings in relation with their Qur’anic context.
