Abstract (2. Language):
Hearing-impairment has many negative effects on language development but some factors as early diagnosis,
beneficial hearing aid and therapy can decrease the negative effects. The aim of this study is revealing the effects of
the Cochlear Implant (CI) on language development of Turkish hearing-impaired children with CI who are between
the age of 2 or 4 and comparing the results with the control group. Besides, the other aim is to reveal the effects
of CI use and language education on language development. The experimental group of 8 children was selected
from the children in Dokuz Eylül University, the Faculty of Medicine the Department of Otorhinolaryngology
Audiology Unit. They were suffering from moderately severe or severe bilateral sensorineural hearing loss and
using CI. These children were compared with the control group of 30 children who were from Dokuz Eylül
University, Narlıdere Nursery School and had no mental or auditory problems. In order to qualify the children’s
receptive and expressive language development, Preschool Language Scale (PLS4) was used three times with
a three-month interval. It was found that the receptive and expressive language age of the children with CI was
lower than the children in control group. However, when they were retested 3 times, it was recorded that their
receptive and expressive language development improved. While there was statistically significant difference
between the length of CI use and the language development, there was no statistically significant difference
between the length of language education and the language development of the hearing impaired children with CI.
