Abstract (2. Language):
This research is conducted on 12-18 year old adolescents who are students at elementary and high schools in Subayeveleri, Hasköy in the Keçiören district of Ankara. The number of samples that would represent the universe is 511 determined by random sampling out of 950. That questionnaire which was prepared to determine the demographic qualities of the adolescents and grandparents, the frequency of meeting with grandparents, and the characteristics of the grandparents perceived by the adolescents was applied to adolescents through a face to face interview with them. In this study it is found out that the average score of adolescents who perceive their grandparents as hospitable, good-hearted, tolerant and generous was the highest, and the score of adolescents who perceive their grandparents as meager, impatient, and irritable was the lowest. Adolescents perceive their maternal grandparents as more generous, goodhearted, hospitable, humorous, tolerant and dynamic whereas they perceive their paternal grandparents as more old fashioned and meager than their maternal grandparents. It is also found out that the older the adolescents grow, the more negative their perception of their grandparents become. In general, as the adolescents grow older, positive traits they attribute to their grandparents decrease whereas negative traits increase. It is observed that positive traits of the grandparents perceived by the adolescents increase as the grandparents’ level of education increases whereas their positive traits decrease when their health decreases. It is found out that the average of adolescents’ perception of the positive traits (generous, good-hearted, hospitable and tolerant) of their grandparents whom they see very occasionally decreases. It is observed that, except for their maternal grandmother, the distance of the grandparents’ house (paternal grandmother, paternal and maternal grandfathers) to their own has no effect on the adolescents’ perception of their grandparents.
