Epistemological discussions are traced back to the period of Sophistes in the history of philosophy. Fundemantal problems of epistemology are mainly the
sourc
e of knowledge and its possibility. Sensualists claimed that the knowledge is not innate. And they claimed certain knowledge is impossible. Because, they claim that humanbeing senses are relative. On the other hand, Rationalists and Dogmatists accept that certain knowledge is possible for humanbeing. In addition they accept that senses are one of the knowledge sources. Further, they accept that the knowledge is innate.

Felsefenin en önemli üç konusundan birisi olan bilgi kuramı ile ilgili sistemli tartışmalar Sofistler döneminde başlamıştır. Bilgi kuramının en temel sorunu bilginin kaynağı ve imkânı sorunudur. Duyumculuğu esas alanlar bilginin kaynağı konusunda, insanın doğuştan bilgi sahibi olmadığını ileri sürerler. Duyu algılarının değişken olması nedeniyle de, kesin bilginin olanaklı olmadığını ileri sürerler. Ancak akılcı olarak nitelendirilen doğuştancı filozoflar, deneye dayalı bilgileri kabul etmekle birlikte, insanın doğuştan da bazı önsel bilgilere sahip olduklarını ileri sürerler. Bu felsefî anlayışta olanlara göre ise, kesin bilgi olanaklıdır.
