La théorie éonomique du choix rationnel offre à la sociologie des religions un nouveau paradigme qui pourrait éventuellement remplacer ou reprendre d’une autre façon diverses approches se proposant actuellement au choix des chercheurs. Cette théorie a le double avantage d’être conceptuellement claire et empiriquementféconde. Elle permet d’intégrer diverses choses déjà connues quant à la participation religieuse; elle estporteuse depossibilités nouvelles deprévision, suggérant de nouvelles perspectives pour la recherche empirique; elle permet d’évaluer les implications d’une intervention de l’Etat sur le marché religieux; elle stimule les échanges entre la recherche entreprise dans lechamp religieux et celle, en plein développement, qui tente de l’appliquer à d’autres institutions et activités “non-marchandes”.

Ekonomik rasyonel seçim teorisi, din sosyolojisine nihaî anlamda potansiyel araştırmacıların güncel olarak ortaya koyduğu farklı yaklaşımlarının yerini alabilecek yeni bir paradigma sunmaktadır. Teorinin kavramsal olarak kusursuz, ampirik olarak verimli olma şeklinde iki avantajı vardır. Dinî katılımla ilgili bilinenlerin çoğunun bütünleşmesine/entegre olmasına imkân tanır; ampirik araştırmalar için yeni yollar önererek mümkün olan yeni öngörüler sunar; devletin dinî pazara müdahalesinin etkilerini değerlendirmeye imkân tanır; dini alan içindeki şirket araştırmaları ile gelişmekte olan diğer piyasa dışı kurum ve faaliyetlerin uygulamaları arasındaki değişimi canlandırır.
