The aim of this review is to evaluate the studies in literature concerning structure and the role of IL-1 in periodontal disease in recent years. IL-I is a very potent mulıil'nartional cytokine that appears to be a central regulator of the inflammatory and immune responses. The IL-1 family consists of three structurally related polypeptide The fist two are IL-la and II1 each of which has a broad spectrum of both beneficial and harmful biologic actions and the third is IJ.-1-receptor antogonist, which inhibits the activities of IL-1. Mary different cell types are capable of producing IL-1 in response to various stimulations. IL-1 is believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of the periodontal disease such as fibroblast proliferation, enhancement of immune response, stimulation of bone resorption. There was seen to decrease in IL-1 level in crevicular fluid after treatment. IL-1 has a pathogenic role in several disease, and reducing its production or blocking its actions is an approppriatc strategy for treating patients with acute and chronic diseases.

IL-I ailesi yapısal olarak ilişkili üç polipeptitten oluşur- Bunlardan IL-lö ve IL-lp* hem yararlı hem de zararlı biyolojik etkileriyle geniş spektrumlu aktiviteye sahiptir. TL-1 ailesinin 3. üyesi TL-1 reseptör anlogoııisli iL-l'in spesifik inhibitöıüdur. Birçok farklı hücre tipi çeşitli sti m ulu sl ara cevap olarak İL I üretme kabiliyetine sahiptir. İL Tin, fibroblast proliferusyonu, immün cevabın gii dendiril m es i, kemik re/.orbsi\onunun stimulasyonu gibi periodontal hastalığın patogenezinde önemli rol oynadığına inanılır. Periodontal tedavi sonrası dişeti oluğu sıvısı IL-1 seviyelerinde a/alma görülmektedir. IL-1 birçok hastalıkla patojenik role sahiptir ve etkisinin blokajı veya sentezinin azaltılması akut ve kronik hastalığa sahip bireylerin tedavi si için bir strateji oluşturabilir.
